Abstract

Electron microscopic examination of biopsied skeletal muscle from a young woman with subacute polymyositis revealed cytoplasmic inclusions composed of 160–240 Å particles which closely resembled picorna virions. These were found only in regenerating muscle fibres and were associated with other cytoplasmic and nuclear changes. This finding emphasizes the importance of subjecting muscle from cases of polymyositis to electron microscopic examination and provides a possible mechanism whereby the antigenic properties of skeletal muscle may be altered so as to render it susceptible to normal immune mechanisms.
