Abstract

There are multiple routes for transmission of the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium, but the role of water has been the dominant subject in recent meetings concerned with this parasite. Currently, research into our understanding of Cryptosporidium has become increasingly diversified, reflected by the many research groups active in this field. The meeting was structured with overview presentations on particular themes, served to ‘set the scene’ for focused workshop sessions in which new data were presented and extended discussions were undertaken. The themes were aetiology, infectivity and pathogenesis; epidemiology and species differentiation; viability and infectivity; Cryptosporidium and the environment; and chemotherapy.
