Cultural and multicultural perspectives on learning and motivation
Asia Pacific Journal of Education, Vol.19(2), pp.9-14
1999
Abstract
In this article, it is argued that multicultural research teams offer unique opportunities for integrating indigenous cultural insight and broader cross‐cultural perspectives on learning and motivation. Combining cultural and cross‐cultural perspectives makes it possible to understand learning and motivation within the cultural‐educational context in which they are located, and at the same time explore possible cultural variations across contexts. The importance, in mainstream cross‐cultural studies, of incorporating extensive and in‐depth interpretation of results within the larger cultural‐educational context, is highlighted. This article provides the introduction to a Special Issue on learning and motivation in higher education: Cross‐cultural issues and multicultural perspectives.
