Abstract

The density and distribution of the Australian bustard Ardeotis australis was determined from observations made during aerial surveys of kangaroos. Bustards were most abundant in the northern half of Australia, particularly on mitchell grass plains. They were rare or absent in much of southern Australia, on parts of which they were reported as common 100 years ago. Bustard density and distribution seems to be influenced by vegetation structure, land use and predation.
