Abstract

The differend as formulated by Jean-Francois Lytoard is a useful heuristic tool for a broad range of critical practices. It is particularly well-suited to a critique of textual violence committed on cultures and continents in the pursuit of various forms of domination. Anyone grateful to recent theory for having introduced us to fresh critical notions and so loosened the grip of traditional philosophical paradigms may therefore wonder at the motives of an essay linking Jean-Francois Lyotard's linguistic definition of injustice with Kant's transcendental procedure. And if its purpose were to present Lyotard as a Kantian the reader's suspicion would be justified...
