Discussion: A phenomeno-sociological approach to fiction

Abstract
Fruitful contributions to our understanding of literature have been made both by the exponents of a phenomenological approach, such as Nicolai Hartmann and especially Roman Ingarden and also by those of the sociological approach, such as Georg Lukacs and Lucien Goldmann. If both approaches are valid as far as they go, and I assume that they are, then one should be able to demonstrate at which point in literary analysis a phenomenological approach has necessity to be complemented by a sociological method. For this purpose I am restricting my investigation to the novel and the short story and wish to project a model which borrows certain concepts from Ingarden and Hartmann, but which is essentially different insofar that the analogy of strata is rejected as a falsifying and limiting factor.
