Effect of age of rootstock and scion defoliation on Epicotyl grafting in Jackffruit

Abstract
An experiment on the effect of age of rootstock and defoliation of scion on epicotyl grafting in jackfruit was conducted at the Germplasm Centre of Fruit Tree Improvement Project, Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period of August 2001 to May 2002. The experiment included three ages rootstocks viz, 10, 15 and 20 days old, and five levels of defoliation of scion made at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 days before grafting which was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The results showed that 10 days old rootstock had the highest success (34.33%) and survivability (64.33%). On the otherhand, scion defoliated at 10 days before grafting showed maximum success (49.56%) and survivability (79.44%). At 120 days after bud breaking, maximum scion height (9.51cm), diameter (0.41cm), and number of leaves per graft (12.53) was observed with 10 days old rootstock, while scion defoliated at 10 days before grafting showed maximum scion height (12.78cm), diameter (0.56cm) and number of leaves per graft (16.33). The rootstock of 10 days old with scion defoliated at 10 days before grafting performed best in all parameters.
