Abstract

An experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from October 2001 to March 2002 to investigate the effect of planning time and variety on the growth and yield of onion. The experiment consisted of four planting time viz. 25 October, 10 November, 25 November and 10 December with two varieties viz. Taherpuri and Faridpuri Bhati. Planting time had significant effect on yield contributing characters of onion. 10 November planting gave the highest bulb yield (20.78 tha-1) by increasing number of leaves plant, fresh weight of foliage, percent of splitting bulb and bulb diameter. Vegetative growth as well as yield of onion was influenced by variety. Maximum bulb yield (18.41t ha-1) was produced by the Faridpuri Bhati variety and the minimum (16.05 tha-1) was obtained from the variety Taherpuri. Yield of bulb range between 12.37 to 22.80 tha-1 among the treatment contaminations, being the highest at 10 November planting with Faridpuri Bhati variety (22.80 tha-1).
