Abstract

Long intermittent exposures ofAraucaria cunninghamii to SO2 and NO2 produced complex interactions with effects on resource allocation and plant morphology. Exposure to NO2 decreased chlorophyll concentrations but increased stem diameter and shoot fresh weight, in an apparent compensatory response, altering the growth form of the tree. The effects of NO2 were counteracted by the additional presence of SO2, although SO2 alone had little effect.
