Abstract

A study of plant distribution around an aluminum smelter emitting fluoride compounds showed differences in plant community composition and structure. These differences may be explained by intra-specific and interspecific variations in tolerance to fluorides and by exposure factors such as plant habit, adaptations to prevent water loss and topography of the area. Possible long-term consequences of this damage are discussed, especially in relation to fire.
