Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at the Horticulture farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from December 2004 to February 2005 to investigate the effects of plant spacing and mulching on the growth and yield of French bean. The experiment consisted of three plant spacings viz. 30cm x 10cm, 30cm x 15cm and 30cm x 20cm and four types of mulch materials viz. No mulch, rice straw mulch, water hyacinth mulch and black polythene mulch were used. The highest yield of French bean pod (10.84 t/ha) was obtained from 30cm x 15cm plant spacing. Mulching had significant effect on all the yield attributes and yield of French bean. Among the mulching treatments, maximum yield (11.73 t/ha) was obtained from the plants mulched with black polythene and the lowest (7.33 t/ha) was obtained from the plants grown without mulch. Maximum yield of French bean pod (12.85 tons) was obtained from the treatment combination of black polythene with 30cm x 15cm plant spacing, which was statistically similar with that of 30cm x 10cm and black polythene mulch while the lowest yield (6.61 t/ha) was produced by the combination of 30cm x 20cm and no mulch treatment.
