Abstract

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural UNiversity, Mymensingh to evaluate the effects of pruning and irrigation intervals on growth and yield of onion cv. N53 during the period from January to April 2007. The experiment included three pruning treatments: (i)control (no pruning), (ii) root pruning, and (iii) leaf and root pruning and five frequencies of irrigation interval of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 days. The yield and yield components varied significantly with pruning and different irrigation intervals. The highest yield of bulb per plot (1.303kg) and yield of bulb per hectare (8.67 ton); were produced from the plants under leaf and root pruning treatment. Most of the parameters showed increasing trend with the higher frequency of irrigation. The highest bulb yield of (10.36 ton ha-1) was recorded from irrigation at 5 days interval with leaf and root pruning treatment combination while the minimum yield (5.62 ton ha-1) was obtained from root pruning with irrigation at 25 days interval. Leaf and root pruning with irrigation at 5 days interval gave the maximum net return of Tk. 65072 per hectare and benefit cost ratio (BCR) of 2.10.
