Abstract

Important socio-economic factors influencing the growth of tourism are the rise in real per capita income and the fall in real price of transport, longer and more frequent paid holidays and the spread of education, which stimulates greater interest in foreign paces and culture (Bryden, 1973; Sathiendrakumar, and Tisdell, 1989) The contribution that tourism makes to the balance of payments is not the only benefit accruing to any country which attracts international tourists. In addition, it could add to the employment and income in the recipient country and it also adds to the tax and other revenues to the government (Britten, 1978; de Kadt, 1979; Sathiendrakumar and Tisdell, 1989; and Bull, 1995), International tourism is considered as an important factor in economic development and international trade. Tourism has certain characteristics that distinguish it from other products. They are resource immobility, capacity constraint coupled with seasonal variation in demand, and the inability of the consumers to experience the product before purchase, other than that from tourist brochures and videos about the place.
