Abstract

Introduction: A major concern for ensuring a culturally secure maternity and birthing experience for Aboriginal women and their families is that of a well prepared and culturally competent midwifery workforce. Whilst all midwifery programs in Australia include educational preparation for care of Aboriginal women, a recently completed four year long NHMRC funded partnership project found that Aboriginal women birthing in urban maternity centres identified that quality clinical care is not always consistent with quality cultural support. Approach: Led by the research project's chief investigator and the CEO of CATSINaM, this workshop will: 1) Share the wisdom of this 4 year project in exploring the critical elements of cultural models of care for Aboriginal women and their families; 2) Share the wisdom of CATSINaM in exploring the requirements for a culturally competent workforce.
