Business performance Personality traits Psychological well-being Trust Women entrepreneurs Women’s empowerment
This study aims to explore the influence of personality traits and trust on the business performance of Bangladeshi women entrepreneurs, and how this performance affects their empowerment and psychological well-being—an area that has been largely underexplored in the literature. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey using a structured interview schedule, involving face-to-face interviews with 161 randomly selected women entrepreneurs in the Gazipur district of Bangladesh, who primarily manage micro-businesses such as beauty parlours, food and baking, tailoring, and boutique trading. Data were analysed using covariance-based Structural Equation Modelling (CB-SEM) to test the theoretical research model. Empirical results, supported by CB-SEM, uncover that (1) women entrepreneurs’ internal locus of control and trust in employees positively and significantly influence business performance, (2) this business performance has a significant positive effect on empowerment and psychological well-being, (3) empowerment has a significant positive impact on psychological well-being and (4) such empowerment positively partially mediates the effect of business performance on psychological well-being. The findings underscore the importance of women entrepreneurs’ personality traits, particularly an internal locus of control, and employee trust. Policy efforts should focus on capacity-building programmes that strengthen this trait, enhance employee management skills, and provide training in digital competencies and trust-based networking platforms. Such initiatives can bridge the gender gap and promote women’s active participation in the knowledge economy, fostering sustainable business success, empowerment, and psychological well-being.
