Abstract

Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic drug used to reduce bleeding in hyperfibrinolytic states. It has also been used in haematologically normal patients with menorrhagia, subarachnoid haemorrhage or other serious bleeding. In a variety of animal models experimental nephritis may be exacerbated by the administration of antifibrinolytic agents similar to tranexamic acid, but this has not been reported in humans in association with the drug. We have recently managed a patient with acute glomerulonephritis in whom immunological glomerular injury appears to have been exacerbated by concomitant tranexamic acid therapy.
