Abstract
Geography Action Week 2000 was fast approaching and the author was trying to decide on a way for her fourth grade class to actively participate in the theme for the year. The theme "Here Today--Here Tomorrow: A Geographic Focus on Conservation" centered on sustainable use, preservation, and restoration of our natural and cultural environment. As an elementary teacher at Sacaton Public School on the Gila River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Sacaton, Arizona, the author always tried to use extra projects to enrich the social studies curriculum and to include the Native American perspective whenever possible. Looking at conservation of the cultural environment would be a way to do this. What began as a Geography Action Week project resulted in many connections to other areas of social studies.
