Abstract

Data for 31 cities studied over 10 yr shows that CO2 emissions from urban transport systems is highly variable but generally the highest CO2 emissions occur in cities with the greatest sprawl, or lowest densities of population and jobs. It is suggested that the greenhouse gases associated with transport systems will continue to increase unless public transport especially in the form of light railways, is provided, traffic calming takes place and planning is oriented to urban villages.
