Abstract
Tobacco smoking is a key health issue for Aboriginal Australians. Smoking, the only named preventable cause of disease mentioned in the Closing the Gap Strategy, is a major preventable contributor to the gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal people and other Australians, with approximately 44 per cent of Aboriginal West Australians smoking, compared to approximately 15 per cent of other West Australians in 2010. Smoking-related illness accounts for 20 per cent of all adult Aboriginal deaths, and is responsible for more Aboriginal ill health than alcohol and other illicit drugs combined.
