Abstract
Research indicates that nurses often lack confidence to identify depression in patients with chronic illnesses, particularly distinguishing between what might be considered a normal low mood and more significant depression.3· Rather more worrying is research suggesting that many community nurses may perceive mental health issues as outside their scope of practice.5,6 The integration of informal assessments into routine nursing may be a strategy to overcome this.
