Iron concentrations and characterisation of the major iron binding proteins in the tissues of the chiton Clavarizona hirtosa

Abstract
Iron has been found in all of the major tissues examined in the chiton Clavarizona hirtosa. By far the highest concentrations were found in the radula and its associated structures. 2. 2. The major iron binding protein in each tissue has been isolated and characterised using molecular exclusion chromatography, PAGE, isoelectric focusing and antigenic specificity, and in all cases was found to be ferritin. 3. 3. Little evidence of heterogeneity in ferritin type was found between the various tissues examined. However, ferritin isolated from the hemolymph displayed different characteristics from tissue ferritins both on PAGE and isoelectric focusing.
