The American Journal of Gastroenterology, Vol.98(7), pp.1456-1458
2003
Abstract
Since the identification of mutations in the hemochromatosis (HFE) gene that are responsible for hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) (1) our understanding of disorders of iron metabolism and the relationship between genotype and phenotype has advanced considerably. In Western countries, most iron overload is caused by mutations in the HFE gene and occurs predominantly in whites, with an incidence of up to one in 200 (2).
