Abstract
The covert racial tensions over the years between Fiji Indians and the Fijians in 'Little India' that resulted in a coup by Fijians in May 1987 are discussed. The reasons behind the coup and the confidence of Fiji Indians that they would be able to achieve political ascendancy in Fiji are analysed.
