Lymphocyte-muscle cell interactions in vivo and in vitro

Abstract
The morphological interactions between lymphocytes and muscle cells were studied in murine muscle grafts undergoing rejection, in muscle tissue from a case of dermatomyositis and in fetal muscle cultures incubated with cytotoxic guinea pig lymphocytes. Close apposition and interdigitation of plasma membranes and evidence of emperipolesis were found in the graft and in the myositis material. In addition, in the in vitro material tangential sections showed that lymphocytes adhered to muscle cells by a series of regularly-spaced 30–40 nm spike-like projections, the muscle cell membrane between these projections showing 70–120 nm depressions. It is suggested that the observed interactions between lymphocytes and muscle cells are part of the mechanism of cell-mediated myotoxicity.
