Abstract
In scene four of Wole Soyinka's play Death and the King's Horseman, a scene simply introduced as "A Masque," there takes place a confrontation between two men in "fancy dress": one, the District Officer Simon Pilkings, dressed in the mask of the Yoruba egungun players; and the other, Olunde, the son of the Horseman of the play's title, dressed in a "sober Western suit."
