Multiculturalism (2010-2011)
The Year's Work in Critical and Cultural Theory, Vol.21(1), pp.1-22
2013
Abstract
This chapter focuses on books published in the field of multiculturalism/multicultural studies primarily in 2010 and 2011. References to a few earlier works, and one published in 2012, are also made. The review acknowledges that multiculturalism as a term is gradually losing its power and significance and books are returning to specific ethnic, intercultural, unity-in-diversity and other related themes. Unsurprisingly not a single book written in or translated into English discussed in this critical survey carries the word multiculturalism in its title or subtitle, although a book not mentioned in earlier surveys but published in 2009—Fortier’s Multicultural Horizons—echoes that word. The survey begins with a book by France Winddance Twine on interracial connections in Britain. The use of ‘interracial’ and ‘multiracial’, hitherto anathema to most multicultural theorists, is symptomatic of either a sense of exhaustion about multiculturalism or a recognition that multiculturalism has to address very real questions about race which is a little different from theoretical reflections on ‘racism’.
