Abstract
The numbers of news items from the 49th (Auckland) ANZAAS Congress in 16 Australian and two New Zealand papers indicate that, while the major capital-city papers gave the event similar attention to previous Congresses, coverage by other Australian publications was appreciably reduced. Biomedical, psychological and energy topics predominated, with little attention to the physical sciences. There were few attempts at interpretation or evaluation
