Abstract

Formal study of music in most nations is based on the Western classical music traditions, which has influenced the preference for Western music. Several researchers have examined the musical preference of subjects at various grade levels. There is a belief among music educators that musics of diverse cultures should be taught alongside Western classical music. The underlying belief in a multicultural music education is that the study of various cultures and music will broaden students' preferences by developing a positive value system about music and cultures different from their own. To do so, it is useful for educators to know how students' preferences for non-Western music can be shaped. This paper examines existing literature regarding non-Western music preference.
