Abstract

Octavius Hammond was superintendent of the Poonindie Native Training Institution near Port Lincoln from 1856 to 1868. He was appointed at the age of 46 to succeed Mathew Blagden Hale while still a lay man (though one active in church affairs) primarily on account of his medical qualifications. He remained associated with the Poonindie Institution until his death in 1878. His work there and at the Anglican church of St Thomas in Port Lincoln was acknowledged positively at the time of his death by many of his contemporaries, but that work was accompanied by a constant struggle to carry out his duties in the face of the negative views held about particular aspects of his work. These views were extended to question his general capacity and fitness for all the positions he occupied.
