Packaging Polynesia's image
Annals of Tourism Research, Vol.26(3), pp.712-715
1999
Abstract
The ways in which advertisers utilize images of the South Pacific in popular fiction, travelogues and film to make these destinations appealing to tourists are described. It is noted that advertisers 'cherry pick' only those images which are appropriate to the identity they are trying to promote. It is concluded that this is just the latest manifestation of how westerners have exploited the cultures and traditions of the Pacific Islanders.
