Pedagogies of engagement: A case study of school-based service-learning
Third Sector Review, Vol.23(1), pp.77-99
2017
Abstract
This paper reports on a case study of student experiences and associated meanings of responsible citizenship through participation in school-based service-learning programs. Through ethnographic interviews, the perspectives of school students and their teacher about the social value of service-learning were qualitatively analysed. This case study of service-learning as a pedagogy of engagement represents education through technologies of citizenship - that is, discourses and programs of service-learning that promote participatory education. Students, the future actors of society, are acquiring important civic qualities not simply through theoretical teaching within the confines of the classroom but also, and more importantly, through experiential programs of immersion that involve them in a direct and personal way with their communities.
