Predicting solid waste quantity and quality – A case study of the Perth Metropolitan Area

Abstract

The results of eight field waste surveys at six landfill sites in the Perth Metropolitan Area serving 26% of the population were examined with the objective of predicting the quantity and nature of waste disposed in the whole Metropolitan Area. Significant differences were found between municipalities in the amounts of domestic and commercial waste, garden waste, building and demolition rubble and industrial waste. These differences were related to characteristics of the municipalities such as population, number of retail establishments, building activities and number of manufacturing establishments. Waste coefficients were derived and were used to predict total waste generated in the Perth Metropolitan Area. Estimates of the composition of the domestic waste component were also derived from the survey results.
