Abstract
This book takes an unusual approach to diplomatic history: British relations with China, Japan and Korea are examined through a study of the buildings that housed the British diplomatic missions, giving an account of their construction, renovation and rebuilding from the establishment of the first legations to the present. The book also tells the stories of the diplomats who complained of inadequate facilities, sought permission and funding for improvements, were periodically burnt out or evacuated and so on. It includes an overview essay on the British presence in East Asia, 1600-2000, and a list of heads of missions.
