Removal of nitrogen from wastewater by soil percolation with alternate flooding and drying
Asian Environment, Vol.6(4), pp.9-16

Abstract
To remove nitrogen from municipal waste water before it is finally disposed can be managed by soil percolation using successive flooding and drying periods. In this way ground water recharge can be achieved as well as pollutant removal. The main processes involved in the removal of nitrogen compounds are dispersion, adsorption, nitrification, leaching and denitrification.
This paper provides data on the experimental determination of dispersion and adsorption properties of an alluvial soil, and the rate of nitrification and denitrification in this soil. As well the effects of · infiltration rate and periods of flooding and drying on removal efficiency have been determined by a simple model.
