Abstract

A new graphics calculator is likely to attract some attention these days, since this form of technology is beginning to have a significant impact on both teaching and curriculum in Australian schools. No doubt, manufacturers and designers, whether based in Japan or the USA, pay close attention to each others' products and to the environments in which they might be used. In such a situation, it is reasonable to expect that new calculators might emulate the most attractive features of their competitors and might also attempt to secure some advantage by innovations of some sort. Ideally, calculator designers will also take their intended users into account. Together, these expectations go a long way towards understanding the new Sharp EL-9600 graphics calculator, just released into the Australian market.
