Abstract

Three dimensional surfaces can be reconstructed by taking pairs of contours and tiling the space between them with polygonal faces. All such techniques must first resample the initial border to give fewer points and a smoother curve. Present sampling algorithms use points equally spaced along the border. This paper describes an improved sampling algorithm which uses nonequal spacing to give better contours. Effectively, this technique concentrates the final contour points in the rapidly varying sections. This can be utilised to give fewer points, (faster display), and better quality in the final image. Error analysis has shown that the new method is significantly better at segmenting medical shapes than previous techniques.
