This study provides the first quantitative information on the fish and benthic macroinvertebrate faunas of Hill Inlet, the northern-most estuary in temperate southwestern Australia. Sampling was conducted in June 2019, when water levels were very high and the bar at the mouth of the estuary was intact. Surface salinities were low and declined in an upstream direction, but a marked halocline was present at most sites, resulting in pronounced hypoxia. Five fish and ten invertebrate species (primarily polychaetes, molluscs and crustaceans) were recorded. The low number of species found in Hill Inlet, relative to other estuaries in the region, was likely caused by the environmental conditions present at the time of sampling.
