Sources of variation for fire spread rate in non-homogeneous fuel

Abstract

We correct the variance for the rate of spread of a fire through a non-homogeneous fuel as described in Catchpole et al. (1989, Ecol. Modelling, 48: 101-112). The spatial dependence of the fuel types can greatly influence this variance; a phenomenon not expressed by the analysis in Catchpole et al. The model is then expanded to include other sources of variation, such as uncertainty concering the fire spread rates in the different fuel types, which can dominate our uncertainty concerning the fire spread rate. The numerical example of fire spread in sagebrush and grass fuels from Catchpole et al. is re-examined.
