Abstract

In the April 2012 edition of the Journal of Democracy, four leading political scientists cast critical eyes upon the progress (or lack thereof) that democracy has been making in Southeast Asia. Thitinan Pongsudhirak looked at the troubled prospects for democracy in his home country of Thailand; Martin Gainsborough asked why democracy has failed to flower in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam; Dan Slater analyzed “strongstate democratization” in Singapore and Malaysia; and Don Emmerson surveyed the region more generally. A common theme—seen especially in Slater’s and Gainsborough’s contributions—was the roles that domestic elites, state structures, and money play in explaining the unevenness of democratic development across the region.
