Abstract

Two doses (4 x 107) of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) induced therapeutic resistance to Mesocestoides corti in mice when given 14 and 28 days post-infection. This was not elicited by a single dose of BCG given 14 days after infection. BCG-induced resistance was not affected by the immunosuppressive agents carrageenan, cyclophosphamide and methyl prednisolone. Resistance was transferred by spleen cells exposed in vivo to both parasite antigen and BCG but not BCG alone. Resistance appeared to be specific for M. corti as spleen cells sensitized to Taenia crassiceps failed to confer resistance M. corti in the presence of BCG.
