Abstract

The reflection and transmission coefficients for the image potential barrier are developed for LEED intensity calculations with the transfer matrix method. The effect of using an image barrier instead of a step barrier is studied by reference to the computed LEED intensities for the (001) surface of copper. The surface state resonances in the LEED intensity versus energy curves are found to be sensitive to the position and shape of the surface potential barrier. A comparison is made between the form of these resonances for the copper (001) surface and the general theory developed by McRae in the preceding paper.
