Abstract

Teaching African Cinema is the result of many years of the BFI’s commitment to African cinema, which the cursory reader may not initially surmise from reading this well written and annotated teaching guide. The BFI’s role in filling the scholarship needs of under-attended cinemas of the world is exemplary. This current effort goes well beyond earlier minor monographs, film festival brochures, and conference notes on the much neglected area of ‘African Cinema’ in English, and in so doing adds an important aspect to world cultural heritage. By using cinema as the bridging medium, it provides crucial information, and a source of potential enjoyment, as it develops the international awareness of high school students, and perhaps of many teachers.
