Abstract
For a university professor such as myself it is a chastening thought that many of the most seminal works in Australian history have been written by scholars who lacked the protection of tenure at a university, with the concomitant advantages of a good library, secretarial assistance, and privileged access to whatever research funds might be available. One such historian, now unjustly neglected, was Brian Fitzpatrick, and to him we should turn for a version of the classic interpretation of the 1891 shearers' strike as it has been recorded in most texts...
