Abstract
This article examines why China's history of intellectual property (IP) is construed very differently by the proponents and opponents of IP and what inspirations we can get when considering some new findings concerning China's IP history. These questions are examined by putting the two tales of China in the context of the global criticism of IP. The article argues that the phenomenon of using China as an empirical underpinning of two conflicting arguments reflects the fundamental role history plays in the global discourse of IP. In this context, this article criticises the conventional views on China's IP history with reference to some new findings in the relevant area.
