2003
Abstract
The Hawaiian species of Liagora with quadripartite carposporangia are described, including two new species, L. donaldiana and L. julieae, and the previously described L. perennis. Liagora donaldiana is characterized by a coarse thallus with distinct annulations and, at the anatomical level, outer cortical cells that are large and clavate.Liagora julieae is distinguished by the production of gonimoblast initials from both cells of the divided zygote (= postfertilization carpogonium). Liagora perennis is described in detail, and features allowing it to be distinguished from the closely related (but with undivided carposporangia) L. divaricata are highlighted. All species conform to the genus Liagora (sensu stricto), in which cortical filaments are much divided and the gonimoblast is moderately diffuse, with sterile filaments intermingling with or loosely enveloping the fertile filaments.
