Abstract

Hawaiian representatives of the genus Ganonema are described and illustrated. Five species are included: Ganonema farinosum (J.V.F. Lamouroux) K.C. Fan & Yung C. Wang (the type of the genus), G. papenfussii (Abbott) Huisman, Abbott & Sherwood, comb. nov. (basionym Liagora papenfussii Abbott), G. pinnatum (Harvey) Huisman, G. samaense (Tseng) Huisman and G. yoshizakii Huisman, Abbott & Sherwood, sp. nov. The morphology, reproduction and taxonomic affinities of each species are described. Quadripartite carposporangia are newly recorded for Hawaiian specimens of G. pinnatum, and the distinctions between that species and G. papenfussii are discussed. As a consequence, records of Japanese specimens previously attributed to G. papenfussii are moved to G. pinnatum. Ganonema yoshizakii sp. nov. is newly described, differing from the known species of Ganonema in a combination of spermatangial and carpogonial branch characteristics. One non-Hawaiian species, described as L. norrisiae Abbott, has been examined and agrees with Ganonema. The combination G. norrisiae (Abbott) Huisman, Abbott & Sherwood, comb. nov. is thus proposed. DNA sequence analyses support the separation of Ganonema from Liagora, with the five Hawaiian species included herein forming a distinct clade.
