Abstract

The Convention on Biological Diversity (1) ('the Biodiversity Convention' or 'the Treaty') adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (the Rio Earth Summit) in June 1992(2) establishes three broad goals: the conservation of biodiversity; the sustainable use of its components; and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of these genetic resources.(3)
