Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of sowing depth, light and temperature on the germination and growth of Celosia argentea to determine the best environmental conditions for its germination to promote its domestication in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. For all treatments, 3 replicate samples of 25 seeds were used, except for the seed weight and viability tests using 100 and 50 seeds, respectively. The effect of temperature on germination was studied by placing the seed petri dishes in incubators at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C for 14 days. During the life cycle of a plant, seeds have the highest resistance to extreme environmental stress. In order to a species to successfully settle in a new habitat, the seeds must be able to germinate well under general environmental conditions. The mature seeds of Celosia argentea are dormant-free, and vigor testing shows that 88% of the seeds are viable. This study clearly shows that the optimal temperature for germination of C. Argentea seed is 25°C.
