Abstract
The Pacific Island nations are engaging the world on climate change and increasingly becoming its conscience on the issue. Rightfully so, given the potentially disastrous implications for these Island nations, if climate change continues to accelerate. Whilst climate change presents real challenges it has masked other equally important issues as the Pacific becomes a highly contested area in geo-political terms. Today, the reengagement of Australia and New Zealand is premised on keeping China out of the region. There are, however, other more nuanced rivalries such as between China and Taiwan, with each vying for crucial support. These debates will no doubt be played out at the UN Climate Change Summit in September this year...
