Abstract

Background: Few examples exist in the literature of community-wide programmes that use multi-strategy and wide-scale approaches to increase physical activity participation; most have used structured programmes that target small groups of individuals and/or specific illnesses. Therefore, we sought to increase population-wide physical activity through the delivery of the Active Launceston health-promotion initiative, which included: suite of community physical activity programmes for people of all ages and abilities, an extensive marketing campaign, input from health and industry professionals, and advocacy for environmental and policy change. Active Launceston is a partnership involving; University of Tasmania, Tasmanian State Government, City of Launceston, not-for-profits, local businesses and community groups.
